Updated Porsche Panamera to Incorporate New Hybrid Technology

The updated Porsche Panamera is set to be revealed at the Icons of Porsche Festival in Dubai on November 24. The sports sedan is currently under going testing to fine tune its dynamic responses. Porsche’s prototype progress update also gives a glimpse of what’s to come, including the addition of another hybrid trim option.

High Asian Demand:

According to Porsche, customer demand for Panamera Hybrids is high in certain Asian markets, with uptake rates reaching nearly 100%. The current hybrid lineup includes the 4 E-Hybrid with 455 horsepower, the 4S E-Hybrid with 552 horsepower, and the Turbo S E-Hybrid with 690 horsepower.
The fourth hybrid variant is expected to follow the 2024 Cayenne, offering a Turbo E-Hybrid delivering 729 horsepower. To accommodate this new addition, the hybrid classification for the Panamera range may be revised.

The Panamera will continue to offer pure combustion engine models as well. Porsche has ensured that the base 2.9-liter V6 and 4.0-liter V8 engines meet the upcoming emissions standards. The V6 engine will receive a slight power increase, while the V8 engine has been optimized with changes such as the use of single scroll turbos instead of twin-scroll.

Hybrid System Upgrades:

All Panamera models, including hybrids, will feature an upgraded hybrid system. This includes a more powerful electric motor within the dual clutch transmission housing. The electric motor also offers higher brake regeneration rates. The battery capacity has been increased from 17.9 kWh to 25.9 kWh. This leads to an improvement in pure electric driving range by up to 70% during testing.

This could increase the EPA-rated driving range from 28 KM to just over 48 KM. Furthermore, charging times are reduced with the introduction of an 11 kW onboard charger.

Porsche refers to this updated Panamera as the third generation, despite it still being based on the second generation platform. Apart from the powertrain upgrades, the suspension has also undergone significant changes. The suspension now has dual valve dampers that separately adjust rebound and compression, providing a wider range of response without the need for a dedicated comfort setting.

Porsche Active Ride Suspension:

Additionally, all Panamera models will offer the new Porsche Active Ride Suspension, which combines dual valve dampers with single-chamber air springs. This suspension design reduced the need for hydraulic anti roll bars, reducing weight and complexity. It also includes an “active cornering” mode that reduces dive and squat to 1.5 degrees and limits lean during cornering to 3.0 degrees. Furthermore, the suspension can adjust vertically by 2.2 inches, enhancing passenger comfort during entry and exit.

Based on spy shots, some changes can be expected for the Panamera. These include Porsche’s new HD Matrix headlights, a full width taillight with an illuminated Porsche logo, reshaped fenders, and new 20 and 21 inch wheels. Reports also suggest that there will be a redesigned digital dash cluster, a relocated shift lever, more comfortable seats, a quieter cabin, and a more spacious cargo bay. Additionally, there may be an option for more intense synthetic exhaust notes.
